Niels Shoe Meulman is an Amsterdam artist whose practice developed from graffiti, lettering and graphic design. He began writing Shoe in 1979 and later developed Calligraffiti, bringing together the traditions of calligraphy with the attitude and visual language of graffiti. His work now ranges from painting and installation to typography and poetry.

For Ruyzdael Publishing, Shoe’s Black Book — Graffiti in the 1980s and its Special Edition return to the black book he kept between 1985 and 1987, documenting his development and encounters with artists including Rammellzee, Dondi White and Keith Haring.
