The publication Repainting Subway Art (Tripl a.k.a. Furious, Ruyzdael Publishing, Amsterdam, 2024) completes a tribute to the inventiveness and creativity of the original graffiti writers and photographers of the book Subway Art (Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, Thames & Hudson, New York, 1984) and the worldwide graffiti movement they inspired for more than 40 years. One gifted Dutch graffiti writer, Tripl, recreated and reinterpreted Subway Art, paying both homage to, and starting a dialogue with, the creators of the original book and graffiti as a whole.
Repainting Subway Art was released exactly 40 years after Subway Art: critical, humorous and respectful. Down to the deepest layer and smallest detail, it shows the dedication, focus and work Tripl put into the re-enactment, from painting to photographing to styling. With 92 pages more than the original, new words and images, an essay and interviews with Martha Cooper and Tripl, the book gives an in-depth view of the project and its meaning.
The text was (re)written by Dr. Edward Birzin, author of the dissertation Subway Art(efact) (2019), What Do One Million Tags Signify? (2017) and Nov York (2002).
